FACILITATOR:
Colonel John King, Chief (retired), Gaithersburg, Maryland; Former Deputy Chief Montgomery County Maryland; Instructor with Executive Police Training, LLC.

ABOUT THE TRAINING:
In October 2002 the nation’s capital region was wrapped in fear when 13 people were shot and 10 were killed within a 23-day period. These murders began within a three-mile area of Montgomery County, before spreading to an area covering seven counties in Maryland, Virginia and Washington, DC. The initial murder was investigated solely by the Montgomery County Police, but when the case was concluded, over 1,000 police officers, federal agents and civilian staff, from numerous law enforcement agencies had worked together to solve the case.

Some topics discussed during training:

  • This case review will cover all major aspects of that complex investigation including: tactical response, investigative protocols, media relations, command and control, task force organization, political influences, logistical needs, organizational communications, uses of technology, and the importance of leadership at every level.
  • The three-hour presentation is geared toward police chiefs, sheriffs and command staff level officers. Mr. King provides, in an entertaining manner, a fast paced and interactive review of the case. Key decisions are reviewed to highlight the executive skills, which were necessary during the numerous leadership challenges presented by this unique case wherein people were being murdered on a regular basis.
